Welcome to the fifth TEDxEastEnd! You are joining a global community of individuals who believe in the power of ideas to change the world.

This year we will be using a mobile app to provide you with information about today. Check the app for details about interactive experiences, art exhibitions and the speakers’ coffeehouse, speaker bios, food menus, sponsor information as well as a live feed of all our social media content.

You can get the app on iOS and Android by searching for WEAREBEEM (choose the app with the lime green logo). You can sign into the app with the email you used to register for tickets.

Hackney Empire 2 - MAKER - Chew
Makers
1. Chew – Chew is the live streaming community for DJs. The world’s first open digital platform that lets DJs support each other, teach each other and make a name for themselves through live streaming video and audio.

Using Chew, bedroom DJs can share their mixes, while building and engaging a global fanbase. But they can also learn from the professionals who are using Chew to broadcast from studios, educational facilities & events across the world.

Hackney Empire 2 - MAKER - Impact Marathon
2. Impact Marathon – We create experiences that go so much further than just running a race. Participants will have a 6 day adventure that incorporates volunteering at the very project they’ve fundraised for, experiencing the region, immersing themselves in the community whilst building towards a running race set in the outstandingly beautiful locations that will truly bring everyone together and change the lives of all involved.
Hackney Empire 2 - MAKER - Pom Pom Factory
Pom Pom Factory – Pom Pom Factory started in 2010 by Karen Hsu. Based in East London, Karen is known for creating flower installations and products using 100% bio-degradable and recycled tissue paper. Each creation is handmade by Karen and her Pom Pom team in the UK.Karen’s clientele includes French labels Naf Naf and Bonpoint, Selfridges department store in the UK and British ready-to-wear labels such as Pyrus and Nicole Farhi. Apart from window installations, Karen’s work has also been featured in private events and weddings, numerous blogs and print publications.
Harold Pinter - Exhibition - Artur Conka
Artur Conka – Artur Conka was born in Slovakia from a Roma background. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in photography at Derby University. He has been accepted to the MA in Moving Imaging at the Royal College of Art. Conka is a director and photographer, co-owning a production company called NewLight Productions. He has had exhibitions at Autograph Gallary, Derby Museum, Berlin Film Festival, Czech Film Festival and Romanian Cultural Festival.
Harold Pinter - Exhibition - Sam Ivin
Sam Ivin – Sam Ivin’s work focuses on social issues and the people connected with them. His pictures attempt to demonstrate the impact these situations have on his subjects. By documenting their stories and perspectives he hopes to provide a more personal, tangible understanding of them. He studied Documentary Photography at the University of Wales, Newport graduating in 2014.

 

Harold Pinter - Exhibition - Marcin Jozefiak
Marcin Jozefiak – Marcin Jozefiak is a photographer and artist. In his practice he searches for visual answers to the relationship between artist and subject. Artwork and the creative process is related to the emotions that each image demonstrates. He completed his Foundation Degree in Photography at City and Islington’s Centre for Business, Arts and Technology in 2013 and then progressed to complete his degree at London Metropolitan University.
Stage 3 - Exhibition - Luke Marsh
Luke Marsh – Luke Marsh is a Leeds born artist and illustrator, currently based in London. He maintains a predominantly traditional drawing based practise, and his 3- dimensional work is often made as an extension to the drawings. The current concern of his practice focuses on the idea of Queer Monstrosity. The work’s narrative hones in on the idea of the “queer” individual remaining a threat and embodying the persona of a “monster” to some.

 

Stage 3 - Exhibition - Saleena Subaiya
Saleena Subaiya – Saleena Subaiya is an emergency medicine physician trained in public health with a passion for film and photography. By combing her skill sets, she aims to share an inside view of international health from a unique perspective. She most recently filmed a documentary highlighting the plight of humanitarian aid workers in removed parts of India entitled Sunday People, currently in post-production. Her photography chronicles her journey both through her work and exploration of the world.

 

Stage 3 - Exhibition - Sarah Dorman
Sarah Dorman – Sarah Dorman lives in London and is a self taught photographer specialising in gig and portrait photographer. She mainly shoots on digital utilising natural light.

 

Hackney Empire 2 Lobby - Makers - Candy Mechanics

Candy Mechanics creates customised candy using 3D scanning, 3D printing and traditional candy making. Candy Mechanics was created by Sam Part, Ben Redford and a deep love of making ridiculously awesome stuff. Our in house Candy man is Will Leigh, he makes the wonderful creations taste as good as they look. After a six week trial by fire in Selfridges London, we now on a three man mission to make sure the world can eat it’s own face.

Visualise are a Virtual Reality production studio, creating world class VR experiences and films. We are a collective of the world’s leading virtual reality filmmakers, photographers, producers, technologists and developers. Combining the craft of traditional storytelling and filmmaking with pioneering technical 360 content production, we deliver incredible VR experiences. Virtual reality isn’t just what we do, it’s our team’s purpose and passion.

Harold Printer Room: 100 Stories

With Hackney Empire’s aim of collecting 100 stories representing the 100 languages spoken in the Borough of Hackney, come and listen to a selection of tales, learn more about the borough’s diverse cultures and be a part of passing on knowledge to a new generation.

Stage 3: Speakers' Coffeehouse

Grab a coffee and talk to our speakers in our contemporary reimagining of a 17th century coffeehouse. History past meets history present.  Immersed in this modern coffeehouse and featuring a display of works by Luke Marsh, go more in depth with speakers to propagate ideas worth spreading.
